Top Entrepreneur Charlie McCoy on Building an Empire From Scratch

Master Barber Charlie McCoy has the Midas touch. From having to pull himself up by his bootstraps to turning his businesses, Artisan Barber and Orchard & Ludlow, into empires, the top entrepreneur knows the secret recipe to building an empire with only a pebble at hand.

Before he became the powerful businessman he is today, Charlie used to work as a Master Barber for L’Oreal’s Kiehl’s. Although he was celebrated and preferred by clients, Charlie knew there was something bigger out there for him, and he could no longer wait to find out what it was.

Navigating the crowded world alone, Charlie had to work harder and smarter than anyone else to succeed. Born a black man and into a religion that sheltered him from the ways of reality proved challenging in the pursuit of his dream. “I had to figure out everything on my own with virtually no help.”

Charlie McCoy was starting from scratch. Having left his faith, he was shunned by the community he grew up in and was armed with only his natural creativity, exceptional reputation as a master barber, and loyal clientele.

However, it didn’t take long before it became apparent that Charlie had made the right move. Soon after he left his career in L’Oreal’s Kiehl’s, the entrepreneur established the well-loved barbershop, Artisan Barber, and a unisex luxury salon, Orchard & Ludlow, in the Upper East Side and Lower East Side in New York City.

A favorite and a popular conversation starter within exclusive circles, Charlie’s establishments enjoy an overwhelming following on social media and a booking list that stretches for months on end. Offering an array of cruelty-free products and services tailored to each client’s needs and wants, both the Artisan Barber and  Orchard & Ludlow are designed to mimic the lauded entrepreneur’s winning traits: overcoming adversity and being multifaceted.

“I don’t fear taking risks in my businesses because I know where I was before and where I am today is a lot better than that and where I will be tomorrow is even better,” Charlie McCoy declares.

Having made it this far in the business, Charlie is excited to help others do the same by sharing simple hacks that have gotten the tip of his empire grazing the underside of the moon. Using Luke 14:28, 14:29, and 14:30, the esteemed businessman shows how he got himself so far.

“Which of you,” the verses begin, “wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?”

Charlie McCoy first takes out the phrase “Sit down and count the cost,” which, he says, should be taken to mean doing intensive research before launching a business. Aside from learning the industry’s ins and outs, an aspiring entrepreneur must always have working capital for shortfalls and contingencies that are to be expected in a starting endeavor.

The next tip that Charlie wants his audience to ponder on is to “ask yourself the right questions.” This step concerns the person’s knowledge, passion, personality, and situation. “Running a business takes a toll on entrepreneurs,” he shares. “Is your family in a position to support you?”

Lastly, there must be a commitment to the new project and time to nourish it. Verse 14:29 provides, “Otherwise, if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you.” A shaky foundation is only destined to fail, which is why it is crucial to invest time in researching the project and choosing the right people to stack the bricks with.

“There is enough space and money in the world for everyone to have a piece; just make sure your brand stands out and stands above the rest.”
