The Kinky Curly Hair Routine

Kinky curly hair can be difficult to manage and to master. Coming up with a routine that works efficiently for 4A-4C hair tresses is one that includes a lot of trial and error. For myself specifically, it took years of learning how to love my hair first and foremost and then understanding it, to come up with a routine that doesn’t harm it. That being said, knowing how draining and time-consuming the process can be, I’m sharing my own kinky curly hair routine for anyone who is looking to switch things up or searching for a routine that best fits them.

  1. Wash day. Wash days are important and figuring out how often you should do them is
critical to your schedule. I typically have my wash day every ten days and in between
those ten days I use my Mielle Organics Detangling Co-Wash and Aussie Miracle Mend Conditioner. Given that I struggle with dry hair and one of my goals is to prevent breakage and strengthen my tresses, on wash day I use the Aussie Miracle Mend line. That includes the line’s shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner. Aussie is a super affordable brand and their products work for us in the 4A to 4C range.
If leading up to wash day I have a lot of product build up, I make sure to use a clarifying shampoo before I go in with my Aussie Miracle Mend Shampoo. The particular clarifying shampoo I use is from Pattern Beauty and its job is to “remove build-up, revive the scalp and give your hair a fresh start.”
  2. Post wash day. After washing my hair, I follow the LOC method to a t. The LOC method means applying leave-in conditioner to your hair, followed by an oil of your choice (for those with low porosity hair I recommend Argan Oil) and then a “curling” product or any styling product. For a styling product, I have used the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard for years and couldn’t imagine using anything different! It’s a product that gives me the definition I’m looking for.
  3. Styling your hair. The hairstyle I choose to use after my wash day varies which is the
benefit of having 4A-4C hair, we can be versatile! If I don’t plan on doing a protective hairstyle such as knotless braids or get hair installed, I’ll typically do a twist out or a braid out. If not, I may do a braid ponytail or a bun and I’ll employ the cult favorite Eco-Styler Gel in Krystal. With a toothbrush and a hard brush, plus a silk scarf my hairstyle is bound to last me for awhile! Those are the three major steps to my kinky curly hair routine with the products that have been helping me through it. By staying consistent with my hair routine, my hair has vastly improved and what more could I want?
